Green technology in mobile telecoms networks
Aim
- To identify the potential for using renewable energy to power mobile base stations in developing countries and produce a business plan to enable mass-scale roll-out
Scope
- Cairneagle was asked to determine the economic conditions which would allow operators to successfully and economically deploy renewable energy-powered base stations
- A key deliverable was a detailed model that produced the financial analysis of deploying green energy solutions based on a range of different technologies (solar, wind, hybrid), diesel prices and geographical locations (using NASA weather data)
- Cairneagle were tasked to develop forecasts, by region, of the likely roll-out of green energy solutions across telecoms networks, to identify the key requirements to ensure wide-scale adoption, and to put together an implementation plan on behalf of the industry association
Outcome
- The results were published on the GSM Association website and tabled at the Green Telecom Summit in Berlin
- A number of operators in developing countries have subsequently initiated green energy trials within their networks supported by the GSM Association
